Old Lick Cemetery
I had moved back to Roanoke after ten years away, had these fresh eyes and wanted to notice everything. Old Lick Cemetery stuck out because it was this old cemetery on an island between an Interstate, a civic center and a motel.
It was a strange little place. Little did I know that it would lead me to the understanding that the entire area had been a neighborhood that was torn down during Urban Renewal time and that the cemetery had been part of the oldest village in the area.
It was on a strange little island because its context had been destroyed.
